Nicol Bolas is a dragon of legendary proportions. He was the leader of the Elder dragons who ruled the multiverse. He is also the only one of them to ascend to planeswalker status. He is said to be the only one to survive after the War of Wurms. In the first planeswalker battle, Nicol Bolas defeated the Great Demon Leviathan. After defeating the Leviathan, he gorged himself in its energy and flesh for years and used its claws to create the legendary Talons Gate, which tore the rift in Madara.

Nicol Bolas has a long history of feuding with the Umezawa clan. The events unfold out of order in the card game. It starts at the end of the Kamigawa story when the Myojin of Nights Reach (commonly refered to simply as "Night") teleports Toshi Umezawa to Madara. His descendant Tetsuo Umezawa tricks Bolas and nearly defeats him. Bolas vows to hunt down all of Toshi's desendants, and he does... except one, Leshrac. Leshrac, "the Walker of the Night", is an evil manipulative planeswalker who accumulates power through the artifact called The Face of Night. Through it he had gathered the power of Phage and stole Bolas's powers. He attempted to defeat Bolas but was defeated by the real Face of Night and thrown into the Madara rift to mend the wound.

After the Time Spiral story ended, Nicol Bolas left, never to return. He hid on the plane of Alara underneath Grixis, draining the power from Alara and regrowing his old powers. Bolas is thwarted though by Ajani Vengeant, Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Tezzeret the Seeker and Sarkhan Vol. See: Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker
