Timmy is a nickname used to describe a Magic player whose enjoyment of the game is derived primarily from playing powerful cards and producing crushing, decisive wins.
Timmy is used in contrast to Johnny, a nickname describing a creative player who likes to win in unexpected or interesting ways; and in contrast to Spike, a player whose enjoyment is derived primarily from competitiveness and winning.
Magic Research and Development (R&D) staff make use of psychographic profiles—a list of attributes used to describe individuals' or groups of individuals' preferences and choices—to guide them in creating and selecting cards for publication. Timmy was the name given to the psychographic profile of the "power gamer," who the Magic R&D staff describe as excited by impressive cards, and focused on dominating wins. The name "Timmy" was coined to evoke the way a younger, less-sophisticated player might focus on impressive creatures and grandiose cards, with less attention paid to the caveats and interactions of the cards chosen for a deck. .
