Cards with a zero cost don't need any mana in order to play them.
These cards are not to be confused with a non-existing mana cost (such as Evermind). Non-land cards with a non-existing mana cost can not be played.
While 0 mana cost cards are underwhelming, there are some notable exceptions including Black Lotus which is powerful enough to be banned in nearly every format, and Lion's Eye Diamond. Card with 0 mana cost may be beneficial in a deck containing very few, or even zero, lands.
As a general rule all cards with a 0 cost are colorless, however, some 0 cost cards specify in their rule text that they are indeed colored in their effect text, or with a color indicator.
- An example of this is Crimson Kobolds whose rules text previously stated "This card is a red spell when cast and Kobolds are a red creature".
- This has now been replaced with a red Color Indicator.
